The Chemin de la Liberté (Freedom Trail)

This is our most popular trek and follows one of the toughest of the World War 2 escape routes across the Pyrenees from France into Spain. Over the years, I have had the pleasure to help many walkers across the mountains, both with the commemorative walk in July and also as a private guide. On one of the crossings, someone described this trail as one of the world's best kept secrets. It has also been called a living memorial.

There is the epic scenery filled with flora and wildlife but also the history as we walk in the footsteps of those brave "helpers" and "escapees" who endeavoured to cross the Pyrenees to reach safety.

The BBC Radio 4 presenter Ed Stourton's memories of his crossing on the commemorative walk in July 2011 can be found at http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-europe-15690262

His adventure was the inspiration for his book 'Cruel Crossing'.

Mountain huts and B and B style accommodation used although one evening is in a shepherd's shelter with no warden. Can be completed with wild camps.

Basic trek is 4 days but there are options to add a day to include the summit of Mont Valier which dominates the latter stages of the trek.
